Check

First you need to check your stock before continuing the rifle stock refinishing. If the rifle is old and has a big money value, it will be lost in refinishing. Then you should determine the condition of the wood. If the wood is severely damage you should then disassemble the rifle stock and remove the butt plate so all what is left in the stock is the wood.

Getting Ready

If the Stock was finish with shellac or varnish it is best to strip it off. Equipments in rifle stock finishing include buying 120-grit sandpaper to sand and remove stain and so only the wood is seen. Then have a damp cloth to wipe the dust from the wood grain. Then sand it again with 300-grit or finer sandpaper to smooth the surface and damp it with cloth again.

Finish it

Rifle stock refinishing solid like look is by rubbing the stock with a four-ought, or 0000-steel wool for the finishing. If you want a solid and dark finish, you can apply a wood sealer and let it dry according to the manufacturer specification. Then apply varnish and stain and other coat to get the right effect you desire.

Natural Beauty

Natural rifle stock refinishing is by rubbing it with a steel wool then poured the wood with a boiled linseed oil; it is available to any building supply stores. Use your palms in rubbing it until it is coated. The friction and heat of your hand helps the oil to go deeper to the wood. Then let the oil in the stock for 2 days and apply another coat. More coats give you more beauty and avoid direct heat and the place should be well-ventilated.

Protect it

For the solid finish apply some clear polyurethane to protect it and gives you a hard look. For rifles that are finish with oiled linseed oil finish apply very thin layer of carnuba wax and use a soft cloth but apply it after 3 days after putting the finish. This is to ensure that the oil is dried up. After that you can assemble it again and admire the beauty and power of your rifle.
